Guy Wampa Wood
Guy Wood is a drummer, composer and producer. Born in 1982, York, UK, rhythm, pulse and the drums have bounced me along this windy road of sonic joy. Growing up in North Yorkshire there was a lot of space to make as much noise as I could, and I took every opportunity, my parents home became a rehearsal room, a recording studio and on many occasions a live music venue. I made music with school friends, forming bands and learning my craft in school bands, choirs and orchestras. I went to study music in Leeds (Leeds College of Music) where I learnt about life and Thelonius Monk and playing the drums with DJ’s. Appearing in iconic venues like the Town & Country Club and the Hi-Fi Club. Then I moved South, to London and studied Jazz (Guildhall School of Music and Drama) and began journey into production and creative collaborative practice Bringing people together to improvise, co-create, make music and build a better society, gave huge meaning to me, so I studied a Masters in Leadership (Guildhall School of Music and Drama) to try and get better at it.After graduating my friend, Jo, and I set up a production studio in Dalston and then a record label and publishing company (WW Records) to look after what we made. The little square in Hackney was also home to NTS radio, where we had a show really late on a school night. And then I moved to Amsterdam to get away from the rain, and it turns out it rains a lot more. I continue to centre my work around social connections. Designing, creating and facilitating inspiring environments to create and co-create music, whilst empowering social diversity, inclusion and representation through the process. I have worked and performed in over 20 countries in 4 continents with many inspiring and touching people playing together in caves, cathedrals, streets, stages, galleries, museums, living rooms and lifts.
